I know there are many people out there who completely detest the Showa Gamera films. But, I find some of them to be entertaining. Yes, they are pretty much nothing more than rip-offs of Godzilla, but are still fun B-movies.
The films have gotten some poor releases over the years, and I mean poor. And, now it seems that a company called Shout Factory(who?) is wanting release the films onto HD.
Thanks to Monster Island News:
“Shout Factory is on the lookout for a 35mm scope print of the U.S. version of Daiei’s 1965 feature Daikaiju Gamera, released here as Gammera The Invincible.”
“Shout Factory has licensed this film along with the 7 other early Showa Gamera films from Kadokawa Pictures, who now owns the Gamera character. Unfortunately, Kadokawa does not own a copy of the U.S. version.”
“Shout Factory plans to release these movies in HD transfer along with new subtitles and many extras. ”
I’m very excited for this. The original films are so bad that they are just fun to watch. However, some(mostly referring to “Destroy All Planets”) just suck. I just hope they get a quality release, because I can remember last time a great film was released in HD, and got a shitty release(coughGojiraBluraycough).
This could also be good news, because if these sell well, then maybe a company will release the 90’s Gamera Trilogy on HD. And, those are considered to be some of the greatest Kaiju(Giant Monster) films to date.
