When Captain America was first announced many(myself included) were wondering whether or not the lead actor would be an American. To some it means literally nothing, but too many they think that should be a must.
At a press conference for “The Wolfman”, Joe Johnston talked about what he wanted in the film. Among these was that he wanted an American actor to portray the character, but also wanted an unknown.
Thanks to Collider:
“Absolutely. Oh yeah. I don’t think we could make without an American playing the part. But we may not be casting in America because we’re going to London and we’ll probably shoot in the UK for most of it because it takes place in Europe. But, yeah, we’ll definitely be casting.”
To me its not MUST, but something that should be considered. I know that its acting, but the character is called Captain AMERICA. The character in its time was a symbol for American patriotism, and I think it should be considered.
Yes, that does limit the choices, because most beefed up actors are usually Australian or some other foreign country. Its almost rare to see an American action star that could look or fit the part.
This whole controversy actually rose when Sam Worthington, was rumored to be in talks about portraying the character. And after seeing “Avatar” a second time, I would actually be inclined to see him in the role.
I am kind of glad(and not surprised) to hear that he wants an unknown for the role.
What do you think?
