Yesterday a rumor started about David Yates helming The Hobbit. Now part of that rumor is true. Warner Bros. and MGM are looking at Yates, David Dobkin (Wedding Crashers) and Brett Ratner (please no) to be the new director of the film. However according to /Film, Warner Bros still wants Peter Jackson to direct The Hobbit.
Jackson has spoken before on this matter, stating “If [directing the films is] what I have to do to protect Warner Bros’ investment, then obviously that’s one angle which I’ll explore…The other studios may not let me out of the contracts.”
His manager states: “[Peter Jackson can’t consider directing] at this time because he has and has had other commitments and obligations to other projects. That said, he and Fran will stop at nothing to protect this franchise and the investment made by New Line, Warners and MGM.”
I have to say that Peter Jackson definitely would be the best choice. The problem is, I think he’ll only direct the film if it is necessary for the studio, and this could ultimately affect how he does the film and how good the film may be. Hopefully he does more for the movie rather than doing it just for the studio’s sake, should he get the job.
On another side of the spectrum, I’m sure hoping Brett Ratner doesn’t get the job.
