Three years ago, a two part film entitled Grindhouse was released, featuring films Planet Terror, directed by Robert Rodriguez, and Death Proof directed by Quentin Tarantino. Grindhouse flopped at the box office, but the people who saw it praise it for its fake trailers. Among these trailers was Machete, which received so much attention that Rodriguez decided to make a full movie based off that trailer. Many reacted warmly to this event, and with the film out many want to know what the film is about. Now I personally have not seen the original Grindhouse film, but I’ve heard a lot about it and have been looking forward to it. And I’m happy to say that Machete delivers what it sets out to do.
Machete follows an ex-federale (cop) known only as Machete (Danny Trejo) who is among many of the illegal immigrants threatened to be removed from country by Senator McLaughlin (Robert De Niro). Machete is hired by a group to kill off this politician, but is betrayed by them and framed for trying to kill the senator. This will only bring the bill of immigration laws forward. So Machete decides to go on a quest to stop this, with the help of an underground freedom fighter (Michelle Rodriguez).
There’s definitely a lot of violence in Machete, some going over the boundaries of “over the top.” As many of you know from watching the red band trailer, there’s the intestinal rope-swing, as well as a moment where Machete chops a head off and cuts the head in half while its still in mid-air. Definitely some dumb but fun action sequences, especially the ending.
And the acting is actually really good. Danny Trejo kicks the crap outta his performance, delivering some great one liners as well as some pretty funny moments one involving a threesome with Lindsay Lohan’s character and her mom. Yes you heard that right. And finally its nice to see Jessica Alba actually be good in a movie. The last time that occurred was back in Sin City which was released back in 2005. Plus she is sizzling hot, and Michelle Rodriguez just, Oh my God, was she f**king hot in this movie! But she also does a good job in her role.
This film brings in the immigration controversy that we are facing, and while many don’t care for it, I kinda liked it and thought that it made this movie more than just a typical revenge/action flick. Of course one could say that Rodriguez spent too much time on this subject rather than a revenge story, but the film actually never felt like a revenge story at all. This might be a movie that brings some people talking about the subject of illegal immigration a lot, so don’t be surprise if you turn on the news and see some Hispanic male being arrested for cutting someone up with a machete…oh I’m gonna get so much crap for that joke.
Now just before you go thinking that Machete is one of the best movies to come out this year, I still have some problems with it. For one thing, Lindsay Lohan did not need to be in this film. She was fine in the part, but her whole character could have been cut out and the movie would have worked. As well, the film goes a little too long for my taste, even at 105 minutes. If it were an 90 minute movie it would have been perfect but it felt like it went on longer than it should have.
Needless to say, Machete brings what we expected out of it and more. It’s a fun movie with great action, but also brings in some controversial subjects that I’m sure people will be talking about in the next couple of days. Danny Trejo owns his role as Machete, the action is intense, Jessica Alba and Michelle Rodriguez are at their hottest as well at their best. Could have been shorter and Lohan’s character could have been deleted, but overall it is an entertaining time. Check it out.
Overall I give Machete an 8 out of 10. You can also watch my video review below:
