For those of you who don’t know, one of my favorite horror films in awhile is the original Spanish film [REC] by directors Jaume Balaguero and Pablo Plaza. It was a film that shows us how good horror films can be made, especially given the use of it’s shaky camera technique. I’ve even talked to people who hate shaky cam who’ve loved this movie. This film was also remade into English entitled “Quarantine,” which left me asking “Why did I pay $7.50 to see this when I have it on my DVD shelf at home?”
The sequel was been already released back in Oct. 2009 at festivals and international countries, but Magnet films have just announced that they plan to make a release in theaters in America this July. Check out the official press release:
“The Wagner/Cuban Company’s Magnet Releasing, genre arm of Magnolia Pictures, announced today that it has acquired US rights to [REC] 2, the anticipated sequel to the terrifying cult favorite [REC]. Directors Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza return for [REC] 2, maintaining the same claustrophobic concept of the original while finding new means of delivering scares to the audience. [REC] told the story of a quarantined apartment building infected with a ferocious virus that spread a terrifying form of demonic possession to the trapped inhabitants. [REC] 2 kicks off shortly after the events of the first film when a medical officer and a SWAT team armed with video cameras are sent into the sealed off apartment building to try and neutralize the situation.
Magnet plans an early July theatrical release for the film, which will be released through Magnolia/Magnet’s Ultra VOD program, debuting a month prior on VOD platforms nationwide.”
The problem is that normally when you release foreign films in the US, they’re usually under limited release, and because I’m only 15 and can’t drive yet, I’m not traveling a long way just to see a movie, no matter how much I would want to see this (which I really want to).
Unless I’m really lucky, I may end up just seeing this on it’s DVD release in October. But that’s so far away dammit! Limited Release, I hate you.
Oh im sorry you may not see it, dude
I loved these movies, and Quarantine was awesome
Have you seen Cloverfield? That movie was beast
Loved Cloverfield as I loved REC, but I didn’t care for Quarantine. As I mentioned above: “Why pay money to rent it or see it on the big screen when I have it already sitting on my shelf at home?” It was way too similar, but never as good. It’s like getting a meal that’s like titled “OMG Super Mega Awesome Lasagna!” and ordering it and it’s just lasagna.
Cloverfield is what got me to see REC and REC is what got me to see Blair Witch
